The Kaynfort was the seat of the powerful Barons of Kayn and was once considered the jewel of the March of Amrun. It was first built during the reign of Queen Maeve upon the abandoned ruin of a Departed settlement at the mouth of the Goblinsoak River, and commanded the delta, bringing security and safety to the settlers there. The Kaynfort and the Barony of Kayn passed to the family of the Margrave Warwick during the reign of King Almark the Black and remained in their hands until it was finally abandoned during the reign of the Young King; the D’Kayn’s were granted lands in the north and sold the Kaynfort to the Varangian Legion, a mercenary band who were unable to maintain the defenses and were not recognized by the Grand Duke of Amrun. By the time that the Great Wave destroyed the small port-town beneath the Kaynfort, the Varangian Legion had been all but decimated in the wars of the Jeweled Coast.
The Kaynfort is now said to be haunted by the souls of those who once protected its walls, and its halls now home to wandering goblin-bands.
Legends tell of the great treasury of the Varangians that is still hidden in the vaults of the Kaynfort, protected by the shade of the legion’s last commander, Jack d’Molay.
